NEW ORLEANS – Two men that were arrested for allegedly trying to steal furniture from the Orleans Parish DA’s office by the Crescent City Connection Police may not have been stealing after all.

The men were seen taking furniture from the office on 627 South White St. by a Criminal Court employee, police said. The employee called police and followed the men in a car after learning that no one was supposed to be working in the office, according to a statement from the CCC.

When the men got on the Cresecent City Connection, the employee following them called the CCC Police, and officers stopped the men near Gen. DeGaulle Boulevard and Behrman Highway.

Lumald Maldonado, 36, Houston, Texas, and Halario Santos, 36, were arrested and turned over to the NOPD, CCC police said.

After the CCC sent out a statement about the arrest, a spokeswoman for the NOPD said that no burglary had occurred.

Officer Jonette Williams said the incident was not classified as a burglary, there was no forced entry and the men were not arrested.

The men said that they were working in the building and their supervisor gave them permission to remove the furniture while the offices are being renovated, Williams said.

The incident is under investigation, Williams said.
