Sports news from the Orlando (FL) Sentinel…
The Atlanta Braves indefinitely suspended pitcher Deunte Heath on Friday after police arrested him in Kissimmee in a Craigslist prostitution sting.
Braves spokesman Brad Hainje said officials Friday sent 24-year-old minor-league pitcher Heath back home to Decatur, Ga.
Heath was in Central Florida with the rest of his team for Braves spring training headquartered at Walt Disney World’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Hainje said Braves officials will not comment further on the arrest, stating they are “continuing to gather information regarding the charges against him in Osceola County.”
Kissimmee investigators on Thursday accused the professional athlete of agreeing to pay $75 for “a sex act” with a prostitute, police spokeswoman Stacie Miller said.
Heath faces charges of soliciting a prostitute and entering a dwelling for prostitution, jail records show.
The player bailed out of the Osceola County Jail Friday after posting a $2,000 bond.
Heath played college baseball at the University of Tennessee and was the Braves’ 19th-round pick in the 2006 amateur draft. He played in 32 minor-league games last year, seven with the Class AAA Gwinnett Braves and 25 with the Class AA the Mississippi Braves.
Police said detectives set up the sting by posting classified ads on the Craigslist and Backpage websites. The men and women arrived Wednesday and Thursday to a townhouse in Kissimmee and agents quickly arrested them.
The suspects include Constanza Ortega, 51, of Pembroke Pines; Benito Molintas Jr., 33, of Lakeland; Paola Londano, 24, of Orlando; Ronald Gonzalez, 33, of Orlando; Luisa A. Pulla, 25, of Miami; Charnique Devine, 22, of Orlando; and Simone Howard, 18, of Orlando.
Verna How, 25, also faces drug-related charges, reports show.
Miller said more arrests made during the sting are pending.
Sex for World Series tickets?
October 30, 2009
Time for the New York Daily News with sports…
The Phillies fan accused of pimping herself out for World Series ticketsclaimed Wednesday she was just flirting with the undercover cop who busted her – not selling sex.
“I was hoping maybe I could get a cheaper price flirting with him,” Susan Finkelstein, 43, said on the “Opie and Anthony” radio show, a day after she was hit with a prostitution charge.
“You know, batting my eyes. It’s not unheard of.
“It was him who brought the whole thing up anyway,” added the married Finkelstein.
“It was just unbelievable that when we started talking about sexy stuff, I got arrested.”
The self-described “desperate buxom blonde” said she didn’t even have to put on an act. The cop she met at a bar after he replied to her Craigslistad was “kind of cute.”
“They sent out the good-looking, blonde, kind of Marine guy,” she said.
In her ad, Finkelstein begged for tickets and said she could be “creative” about payment.
After she met with the undercover cop, she was hauled away in cuffs – but her story may have a happy ending.
Finkelstein is slated to receive free tickets to Sunday’s game compliments of a local radio station and car dealership.
“The only thing she’s guilty of is being a humongous Phillies fan,” said Joey B., executive producer of the “Chio in the Morning” show.
And it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out…

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was taken to a police station over the weekend after getting into a fight with his wife at their suburban Detroit home when he came home drunk, authorities said Monday.
Birmingham Police Chief Richard Patterson said Rosangel Cabrera called 911 at 6 a.m. Saturday, requesting police assistance. An alcohol test found that Miguel Cabrera was at three times the legal limit for driving, police said.
No charges will be filed and both Cabreras refused medical attention.
“We determined that they both contributed to the domestic assault,” Patterson said. “It was minor in nature. They did have some marks on their faces. We could not determine who the aggressor was.”
Cabrera, who hit .323 with 33 home runs and 101 RBIs this season, is in the second season of an eight-year, $152.3 million contract he signed after Detroit acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Florida Marlins.
Cabrera was the best hitter this season for Detroit. But on Friday night, with the Tigers desperately trying to wrap up the American League Central title, he went 0-for-4 and stranded four runners on base in an 8-0 loss to the White Sox. On Saturday night, he again went 0-for-4 and left six runners on base in a 5-1 loss to Chicago.
It wasn’t immediately known where Cabrera went after Friday’s game.
“He did not say exactly where he was at,” the chief said. “We learned that he was possibly at the local hotel with (a) … player from another team, the White Sox. Now, that hasn’t been verified, nor are we in the process of verifying that, but obviously he had been drinking and that’s what we had heard.”
Cabrera’s agent, Fernando Cuza, did not immediately return a message Monday.
“I’m focused on one thing — the game,” Cabrera said Sunday when asked about the facial injuries. Tigers manager Jim Leyland didn’t want to talk about the issue Sunday.
Rosangel Cabrera asked that her husband leave the house, so officers took him to the police station, Patterson said. Cabrera was administered a breath test by police and registered a 0.26 blood-alcohol reading, Patterson said. The legal limit for Michigan drivers is 0.08.
Cabrera was picked up at the station by Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski around 7:30 a.m. Dombrowski declined comment Monday when contacted by The Associated Press.
“I have had a conversation with Miguel,” the Detroit GM wrote in an e-mail over the weekend. “It is a personal situation, and I am not at liberty to discuss it further.”
The Tigers finished the regular season tied the Twins for first place in the American League Central. The teams will play Tuesday in Minnesota, with the winner advancing to the playoffs.
Umpire ejects crowd
June 15, 2009
Okay, it’s not really a crime story, but this one from the AP is funny nonetheless…
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa - An umpire emptied the stands at a high school baseball game, ejecting the entire crowd of more than 100 fans for being unruly.
Umpire Don Briggs said he had no problem with any of the student athletes during Thursday’s game between Winfield-Mount Union and West Burlington.
He said he had to take action because fans were being unruly, yelling and arguing.
However, West Burlington Superintendent James Sleister said he didn’t see any unusual behavior and said he thought the umpire overreacted.
The game resumed after a 40-minute delay. West Burlington won 12-11.
The umpire called police as a precaution. West Burlington police did not immediately respond today to a call seeking comment.
